Asma Uddin:

I'm an American Muslim woman. I don't look the part according to what a lot of people think an American Muslim Woman should look like. I'm completely Muslim, completely American, and devout to both identities. The reason I'm involved in the work that I do is actually related to this negative experience that I went through. The negative seguewaying into the positive - growing into, actually. And so one of the things that I do related to the Muslim community is my work as the editor and writer for the website Altmuslimah, which is all about helping examine the question of gender and Islam. Not just from the female perspective but from the male perspective, and to allow people who are going through the struggles that I went through to do that in a communal setting where they can discuss that with a number of different people and have a place to go to take these issues.
